thanksgiving catch-up 2002-12-02 - 9:12 p.m. We spent some quality time with the bird on our drive up to Knoxville for the Thanksgiving holiday. Cookie can watch the trees go by for hours. We saw every color of leaf -- yellow, orange, red. Before it was all over with, there was nothing left of the turkey but the bones. To Cookie's delight, there were also two pies -- pumpkin and apple -- and three kinds of muffins -- cranberry, pumpkin, and banana. On Saturday we went on a hike to some waterfalls and saw lots of extremely clear icicles. In a protected, shady spot, we found crystal clear stalagtite icicles with a single crystal clear drop of cold water on the tip. It looked just like a cave formation with limewater running down it -- except that it was like pure lead crystal. On Saturday evening we saw the International Space Station pass by overhead. We packed the car so early on Sunday morning that we saw a rather wide conjunction of Venus, Mars, and the new moon with earthshine. Saturn was overhead. On the drive back, we saw that a great many leaves had fallen from the trees, and we could see many hawks sitting by the road looking for prey.
