two good-old-fashioned soviet-style bureaucracies 2012-05-19 - 7:58 a.m. Two bureaucracies that cost themselves cookies: 1) I got the itinerary for the Harpy Eagle trip, and I got all fired up for a few minutes, but then I found out what it takes for an American from Louisiana to get a Brazilian visa. In other words, you can't get there from here. If you're going for business for an oil company with unlimited funds, fine. If you live in Houston, fine. But otherwise, nope, not gonna happen. There is no mail option. No visas for sale at the airport. Just some incredibly Byzantine process by which you make an appointment in Houston or pay some costly service to walk it there for you. I give up. I know where I'm not welcome. My tourist dollars are set aside, and at some point they'll be spent on a bird tour somewhere. But not in Brazil. At least not until something changes. 2) I proposed to give a talk at the library on the basics of how to write eBooks for the Amazon Kindle. I got back this response: We have never offered a class about publishing an eBook, but I think that people will be interested in the topic. However...[list of excuses redacted] I cannot schedule any other new programs until early 2013. Folks, folks, folks. When somebody offers you a freebie, the right answer to the question is NOT, Maybe I'll get around to it in 2013. I was available in June, when my research happened to reveal that they had nothing scheduled on their public calendar.
