a tale of two listservs 2005-09-13 - 8:23 a.m. I'm involved on two listservs. One is for the Louisiana birders, and every morning it's a posting of the dead, fortunately still only one known, the still missing, and the persons known to be safe, many of whom have lost their homes and are scattered to the four corners of the nation. The other is a discussion group for world travellers. Where, believe it or not, a jerk has decided that there is no better time or place than to put forward his personal political views. You see, God didn't cause the people to die in this storm. Mother Nature didn't. The Republican Congress that send the money to repair our levees to Iraq didn't. The Republican Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces who sent overseas the National Guard units needed to defend and protect our coastlines isn't responsible. No, you see, no one is responsible other than the state and local officials who have no money and no real power and yet evacuated more people to safety from this area than have ever been evacuated before -- more than was predicted in any simulation of the disaster. So, the people to blame for the mess are the only people who have done anything useful. You know what? I don't even need the aggravation. There are lots of internet groups and forums to participate in. If you want to spread your message of negativity and hate, knock yourself out, because I'm out of here. I've blocked the jerk's email address and resigned from the listserv, and I'm giving myself a break from opening any more email from people I'm not sure about.
