By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

how would you like to be called cock-of-the-rock?

2009-10-09 - 4:50 p.m.

Good light on a pair of Blue Jays feeding around the fig tree this morning, with a tumble of lavender morning glory flowers growing all around. At first I thought they were eating some unripened figs, but they seem to have left the figs and taken the flowers. Odd. Anyway, it's nice to see them low, all pretty and bright blue, in good light, instead of up high looking all gray against the blue sky. The mockingbird must have been busy at other priorities to let them get away with it.

Well, the mayor of Mandeville has suddenly resigned. "Details soon." Maybe the FBI has finally carted him away?

I think I made a faux pas. I thought I'd asked the other lady to share a room with me on the Bolivia trip, but it comes out that I didn't quite ask. I just assumed. Oops. I hope she wants to do it anyway, but I'll go along with whatever she decides.

I'm beginning to suspect that I'm the only person on this trip who is interested in "small stuff" among the bird species. The others are, I believe, all raptor/bird of prey specialists. I've downloaded a ton of bird lists and suggestions, in hopes of being able to ID at least some of the little guys on my own, without slowing everyone down. It's a bit overwhelming but I'm starting to get quite excited. Besides the raptors, I'm going to try to make up at least a short list of target species. Peach-front Parakeet/Conure and Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, I'm looking at you.
