it's too darn hot

2003-06-10 - 3:48 p.m.

It's hotter than hades -- supposedly 95 degrees yesterday, just as hot or hotter today in my opinion. When I went onto the bird porch, Ronnie had actually left the nest box for the first time in ages, sparking a moment's panic until I checked to see that the baby was OK. I guess there is no sensible reason to incubate a chick when it's hot enough to fry eggs.

Both parents were keeping an anxious eye on the nestbox however, and Courtney peeked in to make sure everything was copacetic after I checked the chick. They are so attentive that it's precious.

The caterpillar has finished his dill plant. I suppose he will move to the next one tomorrow. A Tiger Swallowtail butterfly was flitting around the troubled satsuma tree in the front yard. I think she may have been laying eggs but I decided not to interfere.

Raptor Report: A very nice Sharp-Shinned Hawk circled low and a bit lazily over the yard this morning.

Hummingbird Report: At around 4:30 P.M. a female Ruby-Throat sampled my Cardinal Climber and Abutilon flowers.

evening

The baby Mockingbirds are raising the dead with their cries of outrage when a moment passes without one of the neighbor's infinitude of tent caterpillars being stuffed in their mouths. A Yellow-Billed Cuckoo was also feasting on the tent caterpillars, but he was eating them as he went along, instead of obviously carrying a caterpillar back to a nest.
