my dinner with andre

2009-10-03 - 9:25 a.m.

Dinner at Andre's. We got there rather early and were enjoying a two for one Apple Martini in the bar, when the host told us that we were welcome to be seated earlier. We got a quiet, comfortable booth, where we inspected the menu and IMOM ordered the highly recommended rack of lamb, while I went for the new fish they're trying -- I think it was called omble chevalier, but don't quote me on it. There was a tiny, tasty sushi "gift of friendship" from the chef, and then we had our appetizers -- onion soup for him, macadamia nut crusted scallop for me. That scallop was big enough to beat up any random sharks or lobsters that happened to wander into the sea, and it was also hugely delicious. Oh, and between courses, there was a tiny pineapple sorbet with huckleberries, for a palate cleanser. The fish was wonderful -- a hint of something salmony/trouty going on, but not obnoxiously so, just enough to give some zing. I also tasted the lamb and can report that it was as good as everyone said. We didn't order dessert but a row of teeny tiny petit four thingies came out gratis. At some point during all these proceedings, I had a second Apple Martini, so I was a very cheerful person indeed when the chef came out to ask me how I liked their new fish. I didn't have any witty, intelligent remarks to make, I just exclaimed, Oh, it's really really GOOD.

I did play some poker today, but there weren't any really interesting hands. I got AA numerous times, once in position on the button where I had the opportunity to three bet multiple players, but they were cracked every time. I could grumble and moan, but it wouldn't be interesting, so I won't bother.

We also visited the Flamingo wildlife habitat, and the black-necked swan inspected me closely to see if I'd drop him any more cool sunglasses, but we didn't see our friend the Crowned Crane. I wonder if he passed away. He was there for years and years. Or maybe they sold him to someone with another crane in need of a mate. It's clear that they are not adding new birds right now. The economy, stupid.

The check I deposited to pay for my Bolivia tour cleared yesterday -- wow, seems fast, but fast is good -- and the bird guide asked me if he could order some new memory cards and send them to my house so I can bring them along. So I'm kind of glad I went ahead and paid, instead of bringing the money on the trip, because it seems like he was probably waiting for a nice cash infusion. I think we've all been there and can identify with that feeling.
