2003-07-20 - 6:59 p.m. I am beyond belief at what just happened. So I attempted to drive over and pick up the forgotten toll tag, left in the BF's totalled Toyota, and as I was starting to turn onto the street, the driver behind me thoughtfully looked down at something and smashed into the rear of my car at 40 miles an hour and pushed my car over two huge curbs and completely destroyed my tires, my wheel rims, and even the ability to close the back hatch of my station wagon. God only knows what other damage has been done to the undercarriage or if it can be saved at all. Now this is a car that has never given a day's trouble, never needed any but routine maintenance, destroyed in an instant because someone looked down instead of at the road. She was all very nice and apologetic about it, but I'm afraid I just sat down and cried for a minute. First our house. Now this -- both cars, gone in a day. If anyone ever, ever, ever tries to insult me with the concept of karma again, they are going to get an earful. We have done nothing to deserve this. One thing I've learned: There is no justice, and being a good person who is kind to small animals counts for exactly zip in the great book of judgment. Bitter? Hell, yes, I'm bitter. I keep hearing the voice of a friend who passed away a few years ago whispering his favorite phrase: "This shit gets tired." Oh, and we didn't get the toll tag back either. Hummingbird Report: There were at least two hummingbirds in our yard at the same time, possibly more. One of them was a female/immature, and I believe I saw the dark gorget of the male on the other. (I didn't have binoculars anywhere nearby.) It's post-breeding dispersal time, I suppose. Who knows how many hummingbirds I could see passing through the yard if I actually had a place left where I could sit and watch them?
