2003-08-04 - 8:58 p.m. So we went to the town meeting armed with our photographs. It was held in the Presbyterian Church, so we could admire the beautiful, sparkling stained glass beforehand. We were the first to arrive, because we were a bit early, but it wasn't too awfully long before the place was crowded to the bursting point with pissed-off homeowners. Actually, I thought the drainage plan sounded pretty good for something whipped up at such short notice. The storage units should have never been built on our corner, and probably a lot of other businesses and developments shouldn't have been built either, but apparently in the future, there will be computer modeling to show the effects of new development on the drainage. Meanwhile, they supposedly already have $2 million appropriated from the state to clear the drainage ditch behind our neighborhood -- the one that runs behind my house -- and then line it with concrete. The parish president said that when he got into office, he had promised to have the ditches cleared every year, not realizing just how many ditches there were. Ours hasn't been cleared in three years, and it is like a jungle back there. Just to add insult to injury, apparently there have been some idiots who have been deliberately planting magnolia and iris in the drainage ditches and then, when the workers come to clear them out, they block the workers from proceeding. I mean, excuse me? Magnolia and iris are certainly very pleasant but, have some common sense here people, your experiments in wetland gardening don't belong in the freakin' drainage ditch that carries the water away from your neighbors' homes. In any case, it looks like the clearing will start in September. We are urged to write to the governor to keep the pressure up to get the funds released, so I will do that first thing tomorrow.
