eminent domain, i know you've heard of it 2007-04-30 - 10:21 a.m. So this yesterday from nola.com: The marsh is dying after being starved of sediment and fresh water from the river for decades, and scientists now say the Gulf of Mexico could be lapping at New Orleans suburbs in 10 years, a tragedy whose costs would dwarf the bill delivered to the nation by Hurricane Katrina. The medicine that could prevent that death -- river sediment -- is right next door, and marsh-building projects planned decades ago show it could easily be piped to places where it's needed to reverse erosion and saltwater intrusion. Yet what should have been a quick sprint over a short distance to save the coast regularly turns into an endless marathon through a maze of property rights issues, coastal workers say. Publicly financed projects to prevent southeast Louisiana from being swallowed by the Gulf often are slowed to a crawl and in some cases stopped in deference to the property rights of the very landowners the projects are designed to protect, state officials said. And if Louisiana ends up losing its battle against the Gulf -- forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents -- respect for the property rights of a few could well be a major contributing factor. Erm, yeah, so let's see if we can put this into plain English. A bunch of fuckwit developers want to extort an entire city, not to mention dozens of surrounding towns and neighborhoods, and endanger hundreds of thousands of people, if they don't get paid some ridiculous price for some useless swampland. I have an idea. Seize the land now under eminent domain, and get on with the task of rebuilding the barriers and the marshes. Pay the people whatever they paid for the otherwise useless swampland plus any taxes they ever paid on the property. Get the national guard out to evict any extortionist bum who won't go and book them with extortion. If anyone dies in the next flood of New Orleans, anyone who delayed work on this project in order to extort the city or state will be put on trial for so many counts of manslaughter, and the trial must be held in New Orleans or in whatever town that's flooded where the people are killed. Sheeze louise, how hard is that? Your property rights to a useless bit of swamp aren't as important as the right of an entire city to remain above water. And if you think they are, you're a selfish sociopathic fuckwit who belongs in Angola Prison and not out in the free world screwing up decent people's right to exist.
