By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

alligator go boom

2013-05-31 - 6:12 a.m.

This week we saw Cloverfield and Beasts of the Southern Wild, which is a lot of movies for me in a week.

A bit of an unreliable narrator in Beasts, although one can hardly expect an energetic and imaginative child of that age to be reliable. For some reason, I previously had the impression that the story of the "Bathtub," the illegal town on the wrong side of the levee, was set in the future after the glaciers had collapsed and the ocean levels have risen.

Glaciers do crash dramatically into the sea, and animals called aurochs that don't look particularly like aurochs do run around, but I see no reason to believe that any of this happened outside a very young girl's imagination.

From the look of it, it's a pretty straightforward story of one of those quasi-legal quasi-villages filled with rural homeless on the wrong side of the levee that got mostly washed away by Katrina. The last I heard, a tiny group of them who got washed away from a site near Buras had survived to complain that contractors had taken their land. Well, land is a funny word for it, I guess...

later

Wowsers. I finished my quota and was taking a break for the rest of the month, so I was surprised to see that my page views exploded overnight. My Kim Kardashian fugly feet story has really taken off. It was the top Kim Kardashian story on Yahoo trends a few minutes ago. Yay me.

Really more of a catty humor piece than a story but I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo out there with a disturbed sense of humor.
