great blue heron on the beach at fairhope, alabama

Man, the Great Blue Heron lives the life of Riley in coastal Alabama. If you get out your rod and reel, you must expect to be staked out and claimed by at least one Great Blue Heron, although I saw one hapless fisherman being besieged by four of them at once. It appears to be the custom to hand off some of your catch to these hopeful birds. In the following photographs, I have captured the story of one much-too-successful Great Blue Hustler.

The bird is already full, but he is determined to swallow that one last fat fish. So, after much angst and struggle, he puts down the last fish and then barfs up the next-to-last fish.

Finally, having made that crucial bit of room, he picks up and swallows the larger fish. However, the story is not over, because he also suddenly finds a way to swallow the final, smaller fish. The packing problem is solved...although he ends up with a heck of a bulge in his neck!

I have a theory that his eyes are rolled up to the top of his head in that last picture because he's so full that's the only way he can see out!
