2003-02-03 - 3:05 p.m. I'm disgusted with eBay. After 9-11, they refused to allow the sale of World Trade Center memorabilia for a few weeks, to avoid exploiting people's emotions. I guess it's OK to exploit people's emotions about the destruction of the Columbia though. Scumbags -- I would call them vultures except it would be an insult to a proud family of birds -- are taking advantage and selling damn $5 patches for $100 to $200, not to mention all sorts of other memorabilia. EBay should have and could have declared a cooling-off period. But it's all about making a buck, isn't it? What kind of person hears about a great tragedy and immediately runs to EBay to cash in? I'm looking at a listing for a patch that was posted on Feb. 1 at 11:57 A.M. In other words, the minute this person heard about the disaster, they were up and running with a starting bid for a $5 item of $49.95. Who knows. Maybe every time a space shuttle goes up, these people without a soul buy a patch and pray for disaster. Well, you hit the lottery this time, jerkwad. Don't you feel good about yourself? I know from doing the gem and mineral shows, and also from the flea markets, that there are certain so-called dealers who have no caring for their merchandise, or for their collections, or for their customers. All they care about is making a buck. Having to deal with lowlife dealers is one of the most frustrating parts of selling used or overstocked items. But this...this is just beneath contempt. I'm ashamed to be a part of EBay today. In other news, the United Nations has decided to cover Picasso's Guernica with a curtain. According to a story in artdaily.com , upon being confronted, "A diplomat stated that it would not be an appropriate background if the ambassador of the United States at the U.N. John Negroponte, or (Secretary of State Colin) Powell, talk about war surrounded with women, children and animals shouting with horror and showing the suffering of the bombings." Hell with it. I'm not just disgusted at being an EBayer. I'm disgusted with being a human being. This planet is better than this.
