i hate squirrels 2003-04-03 - 4:22 p.m. I declared victory against the enemy entirely too soon. I thought the new baffles, in combination with moving the suet feeder and nest box away from any tree, would finally be enough to defeat the evil menace. Ha. Apparently the squirrels were just developing their leaping muscles. About an hour ago, an evil-doer leaped from the hot tub over the baffle to scramble to the top of the nestbox. I screamed and went running outside to scare it away. I don't think it got any of the babies. But I'm unsure of what to do next. Voodoo? Squirrel pie? BF says one of his co-workers has been trapping his squirrels for disposal but I'm not sure of the legalities or the practicalities. I strongly suspect that squirrels would continue to move into the open territory faster than I could remove them. Damn it. These Chickadees just work too hard. I would hate to see anything happen to their babies. They were back to feeding them within minutes of the squirrel attack. Hummingbird Report: No hummers the last couple of days. What happened to all my beautiful males? Maybe the females will start coming through soon. I continued to be haunted by the testimony of Mindy Kleinberg. Who told the fighter jets to stand down? I just saw two male Cardinals underneath the suet feeder. I couldn't believe that they were so close. I figured a chase had to start any second...and so it did.
