Warren Fu cracks me up. It's like he has a dream of remaking all the science fiction classics only with Julian Casablancas and as music videos. The "Human Sadness" video is heavy on the nods to Terry Gilliam. We already learned in straight-up remake of Kubrick's 2001 as music video "You Only Live Once" that 40,000 years after the end of humanity there will be nothing left of us but some holograms of The Strokes performing on the reserve battery on an alien planet...now we've got The Voidz pretty much appearing in everything from "Brazil" and "Twelve Monkeys" on down to "On the Beach" and "The Day After Tomorrow" all in one 13 minute flick.
Julian, when they said "come to Brazil" I don't think they meant the movie. But it's still amazing. I had tears...
He said the glasses were from Laurie Anderson's "Big Science." I play "Strange Angels" all the time. Of course most recently I played it a ton as sort of theme music for my owl chase at Lake Superior. But for whatever reason I never really sat down and listened to "Big Science." Will have to do it now for sure! She's amazing, he's amazing. I wonder if they know each other. They must...
A bit later
Oh! I just realized this video must indeed be heavily influenced by "From the Air." TBH I never knew the name of "From The Air." I always thought of it as, "This is your captain speaking..." But it is very apropos!
