By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

i hate wordpress

2012-04-11 - 8:42 a.m.

Oh gosh, I hate WordPress. It just isn't going to work out. It's like dealing with a bunch of bots. Maybe it isn't "like." Maybe you actually ARE dealing with a bunch of bots. I dunno. I set it up, I thought, to archive each month's posts into its own monthly archive. But...nothing archives. EVERY post I've ever made is added to the bottom of the front page. So, if you blog every day, you pretty soon have a page that is too big to load for sane people. Apparently, there was a big flame war about this issue before I joined the site. Me, not knowing anything about it, I just assumed that there was something I was overlooking. So I went to the help forum and asked how to fix it. Because at that point, I had no idea that there was no fix and that the bots at Wordpress were highly angry that people even wanted this horrid bug fixed. The "bot" promptly removed my post and automatically stops me from asking any more help questions. Can you imagine? And I've learned that people who PAY for Wordpress services get exactly the same awful treatment. I'm just glad I found out before I put a lot of work into it. And I'm super glad I decided to test them on a low visibility site like my Peachfront Conure blog.

But it's so annoying that I've already arranged for two guest posts, and I'm offering a guest post on another site, all to help publicize my site...and now there isn't any real chance that I will stick with the WordPress site. It's just too clunky. Seems like it's aimed more for people who will get all fired up, post for a week or two, send WordPress some money, and then forget all about their blog. I'm just not in that target audience. I actually want to write and maintain my blog. Imagine that!

In other news, I also screwed up the pricing on my first Kindle ebook. I thought I could price it at $2.99 and get the 70% royalty. But they say I'm getting only 35%. Even though I specifically checked off the 70% royalty option. Huh? I do all the work, and they get all the money? Why would anybody go for that? Doesn't make sense...I have raised the price to $3.24, which is squarely in the ballpark where they are supposed to pay me 70%. If it still isn't working, I suppose I will have to deal with the Amazon bots. Trés annoying.
