guest entry: the aftermath in new orleans east

2005-11-07 - 7:22 a.m.

all photos 2005 by Roger Williams

While I was in Atlantic City, DH took a call in New Orleans east and had the opportunity to capture a few photographs of the area, including his childhood home. Click here to read his diary entry on his visit. As always, the photographer is not guilty of the editorial remarks I've thoughtfully added below each photo.

this used to be the usual new orleans east suburban catastrophe complete with large church across the street and drug dealers in the playground, now the neighborhood is abandoned

the house looks deceptively ok at a quick glance, let's get closer

don't get excited, that is actually the watermark from rita

uh oh, a peak inside shows the watermark from katrina is within six inches of the ceiling

roger's old bedroom, those aren't his crayons, a child obviously still lived there until the disaster

never let it be said that mother nature doesn't have a juvenile sense of humor, here's an old shed that Roger remembers helping install 30 years ago or so, it's still standing

now check out the relatively brand new deck, installed by the new owners of the house in the last few years, it has been thoughtfully floated over the fence and into the next yard

By the way, if by some wild chance you're reading this and you recognize your house, we can make you a CD of insurance photographs. Unfortunately, I think you pretty much have a total loss.

Afterward, DH managed to capture a few more pictures before returning to the job. Here's a disquieting scene from the Lakefront Airport:
