peregrine falcon joins the yard list

2009-10-07 - 5:53 p.m.

Yay us. A Peregrine Falcon stopped by in a high but not-too-distant pine tree. It might be the first time ever that I didn't regret the loss of the huge old oak trees to Andrew (1992, one tree that neatly KO'd a back neighbor's house), Bill (2003, Mandeville lost 100 big older oak trees) and Katrina. (2005, I've heard that as many as 30 million trees were lost in southeast Louisiana but don't quote me on it, we sure as heck lost the remaining ones along my back skyline.) I heard the bird calling and then found it easily and even had time to run and get DH for a quick look too. He was getting a lot of "tail" but when the bird flew, he finally got a nice look at the face.

I have it on the Mandeville list, but I think I've only seen it in eastern Mandeville, such I remember seeing an overflight of the Northlake Nature Center. It's a new one for the yard.

Maybe it's fate that I decided to skip the aquarium party this year...
