the peachfront conure files
2003-06-07 - 8:17 a.m.
By following these links, you can learn about the joys and sorrows of life with Peachfront Conures, Aratinga aurea. While I have written several books on bird care for T.F.H. Publications and many articles in the 1980s and early 1990s for Bird Talk magazine, among others, I am not a professional bird breeder, bird trainer, or bird psychologist, much less a veterinarian. I do not sell birds. If you need expert advice, vet care, or birds, you will need to try another site. My site is just an open sharing of my amateur adventures with these wonderful birds.
You may donate to my birds if you like, but it is certainly not required. If any donations are received, they will be used for bird food or supplies. I would hope it is obvious that I am not a charity and that any donations would not be tax-deductible, but they would certainly be most appreciated. I accept any donations in the amount of $1 or over.
Since my site is a diary, it has a great mishmash of content that does not relate to Peachfront Conures. Rather than having people only interested in Peachfront information bang their heads searching the whole site, I am using this page as an index to the Peachfront content.
As of the time of setting up this page, June 7, 2003, one of my 13 year old pairs has just hatched a baby chick. As my birds are parent-raised, I may or may not be able to provide photographs of the process. The health of the chick and the serenity of the parents must come first. But, whatever happens, I will be recording the story in my diary. Feel free to come back and visit again to learn how it all turns out.
OK, enough yik yak, here's the index to the Peachfront related content
- Here is a breeding diary that I kept from 1988 through the middle 1990s recording my experiences with breeding Peachfronts. The original diary was kept in a notebook, and since my handwriting is rather awkward and used to cause a callous to form on my finger, the whole diary is quite short, even though it covers a span of quite a few years. If you think everyone finds breeding birds a breeze except you, this diary might seem a little bit more realistic, as it reveals some of the heartbreak as well as the joys.
- Here are my entries concerning the new 2003 breeding season:
I'll be working to keep these entries updated and indexed so that any readers can follow the story in real time if they so desire.
Update July 6, 2003: The parrot aviary is completely demolished by Tropical Storm Bill, which caused a giant 70 foot tall red pin oak to fall on our house and the adjacent aviary.
Update July 29, 2003: I had to sell the finches and move the parrots into the back aviary. Timmy actually seems to be blossoming in the smaller space.
Update Sept. 17, 2003: More about how Timmy's personality changed as a result of the disaster.
Update Feb. 14, 2004: Timmy is back to his old tricks, Courtney and Ronnie have started nesting again
Update March 24, 2004: No babies this time for Courtney and Ronnie
Update April 25, 2004: A chick hatches, an egg is laid.
Update September 10, 2004: A quiet summer with all the peachfronts in good health -- until Timmy has started pulling Sheldon's headfeather's again.
Update October 15, 2004: Sheldon's head feathers have grown back, but I am keeping them separated. Today I placed Sheldon back in the big flight cage, while I'm going to try Timmy in a smaller cage.
Update November 11, 2004: Timmy enjoys a treat.
Update December 25, 2004: A conure Christmas.
Update February 1, 2005: A bratty "welcome home" from Courtney -- peachfronts would prefer that their people keep to a routine and not travel quite so much!
Update February 7, 2005:I discover that Courtney was so scrappy for a good reason -- Ronnie has laid an egg, and he is jealously protecting the nest box.
February 17, 2005: The suspense mounts -- Ronnie has now laid 4 eggs.
March 10, 2005: A broken eggshell appears.
March 12, 2005: Another broken eggshell appears.
March 13, 2005:
Another broken eggshell, another fresh laid egg.
