2011-03-29 - 9:15 a.m. Heh. Two steps forward, one step back. Well, maybe a half step back. I shipped out 7 pounds of Smoky Quartz -- the last of the large pieces of this material that I could find -- and when I got back from the post office, I saw that I already had a package from the Smoky Quartz swapper in question. Over 10 pounds of Utah Pigeon Blood Agate...so I gained weight on that transaction. Utah Pigeon Blood! What an evocative name. It's an old-time rockhound material that I immediately recognized from visiting rockshops out west. I just never knew what it was. Anyhoo, there's a lot of nice deep red material in there. I already sorted out 2 pounds of tumble sized pieces for the rotary tumbler, and I've picked up some other pieces that will make nice cabs. The pieces are small, with nice color, which will make it easy to work up. It's sure as heck more useful to me than 2 and 3 pound chunks of heavily included Smoky Quartz. I'm still net ahead with the "Make room! Make room!" project, thanks to the weight of the material that I moved at the garage sale. Also, on Monday, I ran around to Goodwill and dropped off the big box of Christmas collectibles that the freecycle lady gave me, since they didn't sell at the garage sale. The dining room is actually looking close to civilized at the moment. DH's Netflix movie last night was, The Day After Trinity, the biography of Oppenheimer, which I had seen at the Prytania Theater back in the day. No doubt because of the rockhound stuff, I couldn't help noticing how many of the scientists had gone "native" in New Mexico and now wore bola ties, mostly with expensive Turquoise stones, although one dude's tie was just worked silver. I'm so pleased with these Watermelon in Rubies specimens, so I'm going to re-run my photo from yesterday: 2011 by elaine radford
