a pirate's greatest treasure is her parrot
2011-08-24 - 8:59 a.m.
It sounds terrible to say so, but it seemed as if I hadn't played my records -- CDs now --
in years. One tires of sound, being in the casino all the time. However,
a couple of evenings ago, I played a couple of albums. Later, I sang a
little song to Cookie, a tuneless, one note, one line song, which is about
all I can sing, something like this:
Ahoy, matey, to Cookie and his bell
Ahoy, matey, to Cookie and his bell
Ahoy, Cookie and his bell
This is the story of Cookie and his bell!
Now, here is the cute part. Last night, I decided to put on a nice neutral
background music type of record, to ignore while I was reading my book.
I picked Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds, which is one of those
that you've forgotten you ever heard it the minute it goes off. I put
it on pretty low, so as not to interfere with the reading of the
thrilling mystery.
Suddenly, to my surprise, I snapped aware that Cookie was singing, and
that he had been singing for some time. However, he wasn't singing as
people sing, or as trained Amazons sing, with words. Nor was he sort
of throatily whispering/muttering under his breath, as he often does,
in a sort of faux version of singing which is just really making soft
noises to say "Cookie is here too." Instead he
was singing
as the birds sing, a trilly line or two of whistled notes, repeated over
and over. Even when he caught my eye and realized that I was listening,
he continued to sing. He even started anew, more boldly, when that CD went
off and I replaced it with Laurie Anderson.
So Cookie can sing. Perhaps he has always been able to sing, but I've
never heard him perform for such an extended period of time, as opposed
to a few warbles here or there just to prove he can do it.
