you really need money that bad? 2015-01-27 - 8:57 a.m. Apparently it was settled some time ago, but somebody leaked or it finally got published by the copyright office or something that Tom Petty claimed Sam Smith ripped off "I Won't Stand Down" for that gruesome "Stay With Me" song that has been everywhere recently. Frankly, settlement or no, I don't see any special resemblance -- there are only so many notes and so many ways to arrange them, after all -- and, even if Sam did somehow infringe, what amount of money is it worth to Tom to admit he heard himself in a song that shit? Smith by the bye says he'd never heard "I Won't Stand Down" (so he's a liar and it's hard to feel any sympathy for him) and it's all very coincidental but he's paying Tom off anyway. So everybody involved ends up looking kind of bad if you ask me.
