By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

a pre-tour stroll around town

2013-01-06 - 5:07 p.m.

So I have arrived for my tour a day earlier, not to be a pain in the rear end, but mainly so that I wouldn't miss the tour if my plane got delayed. The other guy did the same thing -- and his plane did get delayed, so he isn't here yet. My hotel is near the theater district, and I went strolling this afternoon to explore the area. Too tired to type much, but I hope these photographs will give a small flavor of the area. It's heavily urbanized, a fact reflected in the bird list.

Today's birds:

  • Yellow-headed Caracara
  • Rock Dove
  • Picazuro Pigeon
  • Eared Dove
  • House Sparrow
  • Monk Parakeet
  • Rufous-Bellied Thrush
  • Rufous Hornero
  • Chalk-Browed Mockingbird

Rufous-Bellied Thrush was really picking up some huge-ass ugly looking black beetles in the park. Yikes. Not appetizing at all. Chalk-browed Mockingbird flicks his wings just like a Northern Mockingbird, except he's got no white flash to show off, so it looks even sillier than usual.

I believe the Monk/Quaker subspecies here is monachus. In any case, I'll wager that it's the same subspecies that was introduced to New Orleans, as both birds are using the tall Canary Island type palms.

I shopped a bit and saw a couple of cute items I might want to buy tomorrow but so far the ATMs I've tried have coughed up my debit card with pity, horror, and scorn.

Why do I keep thinking I have spelled Buenos Aires differently every time? I'm ready for a nap.
