It's springtime at Lake Martin, near Lafayette, Louisiana, and the Roseate Spoonbills are gathering nesting materials and beginning their nests.
We decided to pay a visit to photograph these beautiful but vain birds. Bring out the camera, and they start preening like crazy.
We saw dozens, if not hundreds, of spoonbills paired up. If a third wheel tried to interfere, it would be chased off with much bill clacking.
Here's a nicely posed spoonbill showing the brilliant pink and red feathers in all their glory:
