Massive damage scraps early hopes for Beau Rivage casino--
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) � It appeared the $800 million crown jewel of Gulf Coast casinos had escaped serious damage. But a closer at the Beau Rivage has revealed a gloomier picture.
The resort's Las Vegas-based parent company, MGM Mirage, predicts the Beau Rivage will be the single-biggest loss of any of the 13 casinos lining the Mississippi coast.
Officials estimate fixing the resort could cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take 12 to 16 months, a frustrating setback for the more than 3,000 employees who worked there.
The Beau Rivage was built to withstand a Category Five hurricane, and its exterior walls and core architectural structure emerged largely intact. But the real damage is inside.
MGM Mirage allowed a reporter inside the Beau Rivage for the first time this week, giving The Associated Press a tour of the damage caused by a tidal surge that reached more than two stories.
Debris remains visible in all corners of the gutted first floor. What remains of the front desk is a pile of battered computers, and the atrium has been reduced to rubble.
Hummingbird Report: Some people say their Ruby-Throats are gone, but I just had another butterball so fat that I'm amazed she could get any lift. Not a hummingbird, but a fledgling Northern Cardinal just peeked in my office window.
Red-Tailed Hawk Report: He's back. While I was painting the panels to replace the siding on our house, the conures let out an indignant squawk and I looked up to see a low-flying adult Red-Tailed Hawk. Great red tail and striking patagial marks.
