the blue runner is back

Seeds planted: mesclun lettuce (indoors!), calendula, nasturtium. It gets too hot here for outdoor lettuce...

The blue runner (or black racer, if you prefer) is out of hibernation. He seems to be at close to his full adult length of four feet but perhaps not as thick around as the older one used to be. Give him time.

The nipple on the hummingbird feeder had gone missing overnight. What the--? I replaced it but the other nipple had lost all of its red color so I also tied red ribbon around the tube to make it look a bit like a flower.

The turk's caps have now emerged from the ground. They were knocked down several time by freezes this winter but they're not out. We'll see how many months -- or weeks! -- it takes them to go from one inch high to six feet tall again. August at the latest?

The plan is that a bird can still keep an eye out for predators like the blue runner, various hawks, and that stupid orange cat roaming the neighborhood whilst still enjoying a good bath. I have put nasturtium seeds which will run around on the ground immediately around the base of the bath. And there's another ring of calendula around that...
