crowned cranes won't back down 2012-09-12 - 8:33 a.m. I'll write a little more about Monday and Tuesday's trip into town later, but for this morning I will just tell the story of the West African Crowned Cranes. Two adult pairs are currently sharing a very large exhibit with a family of giraffes. Some barriers have been placed to keep the giraffes from going EVERYWHERE and getting into EVERYTHING. A pair of saucy Cranes has placed their nest extremely close to the barrier, near a spot where they can be near the front to enjoy the admiration of the crowd. Once the unwise male giraffe thought he would stroll over and examine the nest, which the female was sitting on at the time. Not only did she puff up in a flash, the male came out of nowhere, so he suddenly found himself face to face with two puffed, angry birds, that came up to around his ankle... The giraffe backed down. Way fast. He went over and decided that he had business on the opposite side of the enclosure. Although I don't think there was any real chance the giraffe could step far enough over the barrier to crush the eggs, the Cranes were taking no chances.
