rufous hummingbird meets arctic blast

2022-12-23 - 11:19 a.m.

At least one Rufous Hummingbird out there fueling up. It was 27 degrees at sunrise when I got up, and a hummingbird was checking the feeder right away. It was slushy, so I replaced it. I see now I will have to replace the feeder every hour or so while they're still using it. Got a picture of a fat Rufous fueling up a few minutes ago. A few minutes later saw a hummingbird trying to feed from the already frost-bitten Turk's Cap flowers...

I think they'll go into torpor tonight, when it gets even colder. Always wonder where they hide but they are very crafty and know how to go unfound when they need to.

I made a photo of grumpy, let's see how this link works. rufous hummingbird photo

later

Almost 4:30. It never got warmer than 31 degrees. Bird sat anxiously where it could keep an eye on the feeder, which I won't remove until nightfall since it's still liquid. Also just now tried to take something from the regular seed feeder, maybe a tiny bit of chopped mango. The Mockingbird was not happy and knocked the hummingbird off. Hummingbird came back and buzzed the Mockingbird. Very mature. Now the hummer is sitting in the hummingbird garden low enough to keep out of the wind. Cute. The plants have all frozen now and will have to be cut down but I'll leave them for a while since the hummingbirds like to use that area to roost. I started to type "to hide," but this one is sitting right out. I'll try to post a photo later...

Photo here I'm probably going to post this photo later to Medium too... He's too sassy to keep to myself.
