2006-04-20 - 11:13 a.m. Three items from my bulletin board. These scans are no longer available online. Oh, I'm real proud of this one. I thought I'd lost it when my office roof fell in as a result of Tropical Storm Bill, but obviously not, because here it is! This check stub for $25 is from an on-the-skids casino that picked up my green chip for a blackjack when the dealer had blackjack. Uh. Don't think so, guys. They tried to say that since I was using a coupon where the coupon itself was my first card -- an ace -- that my blackjack wasn't the equal of their blackjack. Come on now. Don't recall if we used the word "bogus" back in 1996 but we sure had the concept. I called the Mississippi Gaming Commission then and there, and they actually sent an agent out to talk to the staff immediately. After a short time, I got a letter in the mail telling me to show the letter and the casino would have to issue me a check. I ran out there at warp speed and not a moment too soon, because they were bankrupt and within days had sailed away by dark of night to escape their tax obligations. For weeks afterwards, people would tell me how they'd been cheated in the same way and they hadn't known that they could complain. Or that they didn't bother because they'd played the coupon for $5. Hey, it's your $5. And it isn't like the Gaming Commission charges a fee to check into your claim. This one raised a chuckle. I almost forgot about this one. When I did the gem and mineral shows, because I had so many naturally molted bird feathers, I started crafting my own unique dreamcatchers. It was the height of the fad, and I was able to wholesale quite a few to this lady's store. Me, being praised for my craft. Imagine that. I was flipping through the Living section of the newspaper (or whatever they called it back then in the 80s, maybe it was the Entertainment section) and what did my wandering eye see but a humorous excerpt from one of my Bird Talk articles. The illustration in Bird Talk was pretty cute. Another of the suggestions I'd collected was to provide an aquarium, and they had an Amazon parrot fish-watching. But I can no longer remember if my birds paid much attention to the goldfish or not. I think Arthur, the Original Peachfront, watched the fish sometimes, but memory fades and I no longer recall any specific adventures.
