By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

figure eights over the backyrd

2014-07-05 - 10:20 p.m.

What a silly day. I set the alarm and dragged my happy ass out of bed at 7 AM to watch the concert livestream from Moscow...only to be getting my coffee at two minutes before it started...and ZAP! The power goes out...for the next six hours. I'm bitter, the lovebird is bitter, everybody's bitter.

The outage wasn't caused by our coffee maker or our AC or anything we did. It was a widespread outage caused by a tree down on a line somewhere. What an inopportune time for it. Sigh.

The cute musician is perhaps tired of being the cute musician and now wants to be taken seriously, so he has butchered his hair, but the girls who posted the (many) photos from the concert said it was great. The power did come on in time to allow Nyota and I to watch the AM concert livestream from Denmark so the entire July 4th weekend hasn't been a total waste...

Oddly enough, I saw the two adult Red-Headed Woodpeckers doing the figure-eight courtship flight this morning. In July? I've only ever seen this in April? They do have at least one successful fledgling because the baby stopped by the feeder maybe 10 or 15 minutes later, so it isn't like their hatchlings died and they have to start all over...
