some lives you live and some you leave behind

I've fallen back into the lo fi garage grunge pit, and I can't get up. I just heard On Avery Island by Neutral Milk Hotel, and it's just fall-on-the-floor brilliant. As the title suggests, these boys were from Louisiana. The theme seems to be the death of rock -- one of the tracks is called April 8, the day Kurt Cobain's body was found -- and there's a 13 minute track rumored to be inspired by the sounds you hear when you're dying. Not really too surprised I didn't hear it back in the day. In 1996 everybody in Louisiana and Mississippi was casino crazy, and nobody was going to hear anything that wasn't easily digestible pop/oldies/country suitable for playing around old people. Well, I guess they're old now, or at least middle-aged, but apparently they are going to try again and are actually touring this year. In fact, they're playing in New Orleans the day I'm leaving town. Of course with my bad knee, my concert going days may be over anyway. Sniffle.
