By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

giftmas grumbling followed by the feast

2014-11-28 - 9:36 a.m.

I should have photographed the crispy skin roast chicken. It was beautiful and tasty too. Baked sweet potato. Pumpkin pie. Prosecco mimosas made with our own satsumas. A capful of creme de cacoa in the coffee alongside the pie...It was still a pretty snoozy day though.

In the morning before all the cooking, I tried to wrap a couple of Christmas presents, an endless process. Despite the wrap off the roll, it all ripped and tore and wouldn't sit right, and it ended up looking like I'd cared enough about the future to use recycled Christmas wrap anyway. Every year the wrapping and shipping process itself is a nightmare all by itself, never mind the horrors of the shopping process. I have about concluded that this is the last year I exchange gifts. It's an awful, ridiculous custom. Maybe it's all right for little kids, who don't have such a huge backlog of memories of being disappointed and/or disappointing. But for adults, it's the thought that counts, and the thought is -- anything you want and I can afford you already have but we're trapped in this miserable obligation anyway. Ugh!
