Thousands upon thousands of Great Egrets are beginning the nesting season at Lake Martin, near Lafayette, Louisiana.

With plumes like these on display, no wonder the Snowy Egret are going to wait until a bit later in the year. This magnificent Great Egret quickly attracted the attention of another.

Just the other day, D. was complaining that you never see that green mask, and yet every bird BF and I examined closely enough at Lake Martin seemed to be sporting the green. Many pairs have already built sizable nests, and a few birds were sitting. Scadzillions of birds were carrying sticks and still working on their home-building projects.
