By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

the haze has ascended apparently

2013-10-22 - 10:45 a.m.

For our last day in sunny San Francisco, we explored the various historical old boats, including the huge old gray WW2 battleship and the feisty wooden boats of the national maritime museum.

We also found time for a lunch overlooking the water that allowed me to enjoy an entire garlic-roasted Dungeness crab.

Somehow we managed to get lost along the way but we eventually made it out to the mosaic steps near Golden Gate Park which led to the top of a scenic but -- oops! -- foggy hilltop.

When we started on this journey, it was actually sunny and promised a fine view but -- alas and alack -- we could see the fog rolling in over the mountain as we approached our final destination. So there is in fact fog in San Francisco after all.

Walking up the tiled steps, you travel from the dawn of time as life crawls out of the oceans and onto the land and into space. But there's a touch of weirdness to the story. The sea is below the land which is below the air which is below outer space. But the birds of the air are below the bats of the air, which is kinda unusual. Then you enter the universe and the stars. But the sun is at the top -- higher than the entire universe. I hope to have some good pictures later when I get reunited with my camera cable cord.

A very strange thing is that you can only see the mosaics going up. The stairs just look like regular old boring stairs going down.

For dinner we found a Japanese place with a $1 sake happy hour. Wheeeeee.
