Read my new book, The 10 Best Things You Can Do For Your Bird at Amazon or at many other fine distributors like Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and more.

By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

iceland gull comes a long way to join the life list

2013-12-05 - 9:12 a.m.

The Iceland Gull has been seen by everyone and photographed by many, and now the heated fisticuffs about whether or not it's Kumlien's or the nominate or the second state record or the third are in full swing. It would be silly of me to miss the fun, so I headed out Wednesday afternoon to spot the bird at its lakefront location. People have been seeing it at 4 PM, and now I suspect I know why. Promptly at that time a kid began throwing bread, and all the gulls -- including the bold and beautiful Iceland's -- came spiraling in to do battle for their fair share. Great views for me and a new lifer, not to mention a historic Louisiana state record even if I don't know yet exactly what the record is. Certainly a St. Tammany Parish/Greater New Orleans first record, since the previous Iceland Gull was seen in Venice..

I still don't know if it's legal to throw bread crumbs there, or if they changed that law against having food at the lakefront. But apparently no one is going to say anything to stop a child from feeding the birdies. Wheeee.

Oh, yeah, and silly me. I need to put my new cutie on the state life list as well. It's highly likely to be the only Iceland Gull I ever see here.
