By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

a couple of handmade jewels i got from my swaps

Who Dat Say They Gonna Beat Dem Saints?????

Shipped my last eBay parcel, went to the library, felt a bit faint. I always check out six books at a time, so I never have to wonder about how many to take back, but I felt a little trembly by the fifth book. I sat down in the nearest comfy chair and noticed a book across the way with parrots on it. "Fine, I'll get that one," I says to myself, says I. It looks like it will be about reality TV, so I doubt I'll find it very involving, but I don't want to check out five books and later be turning the whole house upside down asking myself, "Wait, wasn't there another book I'm supposed to return?"

A breakthrough, or maybe not. My mentor has noticed that he wins the most at NL during the first hour of play. I have pointed out that this can't be a good sign, since it means that he's losing the war of information -- the longer he plays, the better the other players adapt to his style to exploit him, and he isn't enjoying the same advantage from observing their play. I actually already suspected it, from little comments here and there, that he was falling back too much on rules of thumb instead of developing good reads. We're thinking of returning to a short-stacked, two street game. Not a moment too soon, methinks. We were unrealistic to think we could just sit down and immediately understand the unspoken language of No Limit. A Portuguese man may understand Spanish but it doesn't mean he grasps all the subtle points.

I meant to take all kinds of marvelous and impressive photographs today, but I simply wasn't well enough yet. Still, here are photographs of the two pieces of jewelry that I got from frogandbearcreations in a swap, having exchanged two nicely set stones for a big ole box of unworked Nickel Silica. The carved lizard is chrysoprase, and I've been wanting a chrysoprase piece for ages. The blue topaz is not really my favorite stone, but it's my birthstone, and I got a lot of compliments on it when I wore it for the first time the other day. I think the blue does fit my skin tones. I should do more blue, I don't know why I never think of it. Here at "Peachfront Speaks," we're all about the orange. Note: Although I still have these pieces in my collections, these photos are no longer online.

A bit worried about the strike on Cardel, Veracruz by Hurricane Karl, since they've never had hurricane force wins before. [This is the town that Bill Clark, among others, discovered as a "funnel" for migrating raptors from the Canada and United States into South America, resulting in huge numbers of migrating birds of prey and vultures. My trip report from 1998 can be found here.] It's the time of year when the raptor seekers are starting to descend, so I suppose we'll soon hear if help is needed. But almost everyone in my tiny circle, including Bill, is currently on the Australia raptor trip so I'm not sure if they even know about it yet.
