sheldon's story

2019-06-29 - 8:57 p.m.

A big day for Sheldon, my aviary peachfront. So much of his life was about his mate, but recently I saw signs he was willing to finally move on from the grieving process. He was flirting with Boobear, angrily displaying at Nyota & Cookie. Plus Ronnie has been gone long enough now that he really does need someone or some birdie to do his head.

So I started doing his head.

And today at first he cried-- his voice has been shaky for years, and he mostly doesn't comment unless he's annoyed-- but today while I was scratching his head he cried. Maybe for a minute or two, not much more, but enough. And something changed inside him. I let him exercise his wings, and he flew more strongly, probably because I've groomed some of his new feathers from his molt.

And then he stepped onto a stick.

And then he stepped onto my arm.

An imported bird who was never tamed because he was an aviary bird. A bird who has always known he was a bird.

He stepped onto my arm. And we strolled around. We looked at the TV show hubby & Cookie were watching. We just walked around and looked at anything.

He never considered himself a pet and would probably still be insulted to be considered a mere "pet." Call him a friend. Once a bird with total focus on his partner and no other, he is now willing to be a friend.
