kites still at it

2004-05-11 - 8:51 a.m.

Those horndog Mississippi Kites are at it again. The 8:30 mating looked like a successful one with lots of good contact of the appropriate places. As before, the male doesn't grip her neck; he prefers to balance by holding and cupping his wings in the air. It worked as long as he was actually pumping, but the end result was a rather undignified stumble off her back when he was finished. But it does keep her neck feathers from being roughed up from all this, er, activity.

We're under a flood watch. Sigh. At least I won't have to water the tomatoes.

around 1:15 P.M.

Now I've seen everything. A male Northern Mockingbird just mounted the female, and he was singing as he performed the dirty deed. After all the boast and brag, she spent more time shaking out her feathers than he spent mussing them up.

I'm sure on a roll for observing dirty birdies.

later

Yeah, you guessed it. The Kites were "active" again, at least once, but probably twice or three times. One of their spots is partly concealed by branches. At the moment, one Kite is sitting in the oak tree, while the other is circling.

I reported the Swallow-Tailed Kites, my 70th bird for the yard list. Apparently, one of them has a radio tag and is known to be in this area.

pitcher plants at undisclosed location
 2002 by Elaine Radford

OK, I'm a little peeved about something. A short while ago, an idiot reporter put a story in a local newspaper telling where you could find "possibly the largest collection of insect-eating plants" growing wild in the world. Well, not after you tell the collectors where it is, you idiot. He did all but draw a damn map. I don't have much confidence that we'll be seeing them next year, especially the parrot pitcher plants.

I guess what I'm leading up to is...if I find any Kite nests, I may take pictures and I may make a note of what I saw in my diary, but I won't be posting directions. I'm not saying I wouldn't meet someone to show them the nests, but I wouldn't be comfortable announcing the location to the world at large. There are always a few bad apples that spoil it for everybody.

Hummingbird Report: Mostly males or a highly active male RTHU dominating the near feeder and the chases.
