baby Cooper's hawk being rehabbed at Wild Bird Center

Today we decided to check out the free bird walks being offered by the Wild Bird Center in Covington. As it happened, we were the only people to show up, besides the guide. It was sunny and windy, and starting to get hot as the day progressed. I birded the parking lot at the Wild Bird Center and to and from the drive to Fontainebleau State Park, as well as the park itself, but at times the birding was challenging because lots of little guys remained stubbornly hidden in the trees.

mystery non-venomous snake species

Reptile puzzle: A huge snake, perhaps five feet long, posed for us underneath the oak alley. My first impression was that it was a blue runner/black racer, because we could see a blue iridescent sheen across the dark scales. However, when the snake moved so that the sunlight reflected from a different angle, we could see a faint pattern that made it look more like a ratsnake or kingsnake of some kind. Having just checked enature.com to learn that there are 11 "poorly defined" species or subspecies of black racer in the area, I am more confused than ever.

Bird notable: We had a great look at Least Bittern flying across almost from one end of the boardwalk to the other, instead of just popping up and down like they usually do.
