the low spark of high-priced books

2014-03-30 - 5:40 p.m.

A bunch of migrating Indigo Buntings stopped by while I was weeding the front yard. The aggressive Mockingbird moved them along with a hiss, then immediately got into some very physical fisticuffs with another Mockingbird.

We ate at the bookstore, bought a stove and arranged for it to be delivered, tried to sell some old books at the used book store. They were all too old except one, but the trip was a worth a stop because they had a cheap copy of the 1988 Conures with my photo of Arthur on the cover. I already have a copy on display in my house, but I picked up the second copy for the hurricane evacuation kit. Ha. Ego. But Arthur was just too, too cute.

It seems like 1988 is a lot older than the books I had, but I figure it's different for a bird book. On the Spain trip, the guys told me that a copy of one of B's out of print books had sold for $1,500. What! Of course my copy is 1) personalized to me, and 2) a paperback, so I suspect it wouldn't fetch anywhere near that amount.

I may have just hit lucky when I bought that New Zealand field guide there the other day. They had no bird field guides at all today.
