of loons and kinglets
2003-01-25 - 1:57 p.m.
A pleasant day bird-wise. We drove over to Oak Harbor in Slidell to search for the
Pacific Loon that some people were seeing. Whoa. We saw a lot of loons. This must
be the loon winter vacation resort. We didn't see the Pacific species though.
Notables were Horned Grebe and a nice V of around 8 low-flying White Pelicans.
Back home, I added to the day's bird list by watching the feeder and pond. To my stunned
surprise, I added Golden-Crowned Kinglet. She was actually on the ground, near
the pond. A Ruby-Crowned Kinglet and Yellow-Rumped Warbler were there as well.
A lot of people have stated that it is a good year for Golden-Crowned Kinglet
in Louisiana, but I hadn't observed any. I might have missed this one except it was so close
and so low, allowing me to see the well-defined yellow crown that marks the female.
At first, I was thinking, warbler, warbler, and kept thumbing through the
book looking for a match with no success. Then the Yellow-Rumped Warbler bopped by
and looked so huge by contrast that it snapped into focus that I was looking at
an unfamiliar kinglet.
Note: Italics to indicate birds seen only in my yard.

There has been a stupid hacker or terrorist denial of service attack on the internet
since Thursday, although the powers-that-be are only admitting to it occurring
in the wee hours of Saturday morning, like we can't perfectly well observe
for ourselves that the whole internet has been and still is moving at the speed of sloth. At least it
allows for plenty of time to gaze out the window!
