By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

lost birds, flirty dirty birds

2012-09-16 - 8:11 a.m.

The Inca Doves are still here. Getting a kick out of seeing their red under-arms flash when they fly.

In their new location, Courtney and Dale continue to inspect the feeder. A baby Red-bellied Woodpecker is dining at the moment. From the way the feathers are coming in now on the head, I predict a male.

The change of scenery must have inspired the peachfronted conures. Both pairs were performing courtship dances yesterday. Flirt, waggle the tail, invite him forward, then slip away. Courtney gets a bit angry about being teased, but for Sheldon it's all in the game. Those two, Sheldon and Ronnie, are back to it this morning.

There's a half open Turk's Cap flower just above the stone mosaic bird bath, and the Northern Cardinal chips as he flies over to see what's what. Then he takes a few sips. It's funny how he uses it every day, while the other birds visit it relatively rarely. Such a rainy year, they haven't had a need for it.

I have the rescue bird in the quarantine cage in the dining room now. A pastel blue peach-faced lovebird...in other words, a peach-faced lovebird with almost all of the peach except a patch above the bill bred out. You might even say...wait for it...a peach-fronted lovebird. She is a stocky, if not out and out chubby, fully flighted adult.
