The fires are worse than ever to the north, and our winery tour was canceled for the second time. However, you can actually walk outside in downtown San Diego without falling down in a dead faint. They say it's like you just started smoking and since people smoke for three decades before they start dropping dead, we succumbed to cabin fever and spent the day at Balboa Park.

We weren't totally crazy though. We spent lots of time indoors at the model train museum, the art museum and at the Prado restaurant, which featured an evil Mango Martini and fusion shrimp-stuffed, panko-crusted chile rellenos of the most delicious sort.

A highlight in the day was a late afternoon stroll in the Japanese garden, where we observed two male Anna's hummingbirds fighting over the waterfall. The winner rewarded himself with a long, luxurious bath to get all the darn ash off his tiny emerald body.
A big worry is that we are unable to get in touch with M.'s 101 year old cousin in San Bernardino County to find out if he was safely evacuated or not. He is legally blind and hard of hearing, and doesn't answer the phone unless he is standing right beside it, so M. is going crazy trying to learn if he is aware that he needed to be evacuated from his area. The San Diego newspaper and internet gave four telephone numbers to report missing animals, but not one to report missing elders. I tried calling Meals on Wheels, the number they gave for elder services, but they don't seem to be equipped for a missing persons operation. I managed to get the San Berdoo Fire and Sheriff Department phone numbers to M. before my cell phone gave out, so I'm hoping for the best.
