Sometimes you read the news, and all you can think is, "Those fuckers." (Sorry, mom.) Here are a couple of items from today's nola.com:

  • "Sheet piling supporting the failed floodwall on the 17th Street Canal extends just 10 feet below sea level, 7 feet shorter than the Corps of Engineers has maintained, a team of investigators said Wednesday, strengthening earlier findings that faulty design and construction played a role in the canal breaches that flooded much of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina." -- Bob Marshall, staff writer

  • WASHINGTON -- "In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the tattered Gulf Coast received an outpouring of sympathy -- and money -- from Washington. Congress appropriated $62 billion for relief and recovery, and President Bush vowed to rebuild New Orleans "higher and better."

But 2 months after the storm, such unequivocal support is hard to come by in the nation's capital....

And in contrast to the clear commitment Bush gave in a speech at Jackson Square on Sept. 15 to "do what it takes . . . stay as long as it takes" to restore the city, his administration now appears reluctant to signal its support for protection from hurricanes stronger than Katrina and Rita.

Asked this week if Bush backs Category 5 protection, the White House declined to answer directly. Instead, it issued a statement saying that it is financing work to restore the levees to pre-Katrina levels and accelerating financing for a study examining enhanced hurricane protection." -- Bill Walsh and Bruce Alpert, Washington Bureau writers

Now, you might ask yourself, why in the world wouldn't any government prefer to spend $18 billion for proper levee protection, rather than $300 billion for the clean-up? But that's because you haven't thought it through. The bigger the disaster, the more bucks for Halliburton and Exxon-Mobil. How else is an oil company to report the biggest profits for any quarter for any industry in all of human history?
