By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

september 26, 2000

2010-09-24 - 8:50 a.m.

Been trying to house-clean, so that I can set up to do something with all of my luscious gem and mineral material. It's slow going. I keep finding stuff. A few minutes ago, I found a letter dated September 26, 2000, from which I've clipped an excerpt:

Can you believe it? They have received the final payment for our house and, as we have overpaid by 11 cents, we're getting it back. Wheeeee. 10 years ago as of Sunday...Thank you to all the loose games and casinos of the 1990s, we could not have done it without you.

I used a simple system. Every time I got paid by the blackjack team, I took out 1/3 for Social Security and estimated income tax payments. Then, each month, when I paid the house note, I would add in whatever extra money I had as an extra pre-payment of principal. I rolled any over-payment of taxes toward the next estimated tax payment, so I might have no estimated payments due at all in some quarters and I could make a nice extra house payment. Eventually, it all snowballed, because the principal was getting smaller and smaller and smaller.

You should not do this if you're in a situation where it's somehow possible that you could ever somehow end up in foreclosure, because if you ever lost your house, you might as well lose the minimum investment. But, at the time we embarked on this plan, DH had converted to working full-time (and was also in some years being authorized for lots of overtime), I still had reliable monthly checks from my writing assignments, and I had the extra income from the blackjack team plus various coupon hustles.

Also, I've learned that if you have kids, you might as well forget about saving any money, because anything you try to save, they'll just sign your name to it and you're out the money anyway. You have to pay it -- that "zero liability" clause is apparently only when you're robbed by people you don't know. Fortunately, I have not yet taught Cookie how to scrawl his name on a credit card application.

Anyway, good thing we planned ahead, as overtime is a rare thing indeed for DH these days, paid writing is no more thanks to the internet, and let's not even talk about the squeaky-tight consolidated casino industry of the 21st century. Blackjack is pretty much dead -- for me, it's completely dead, since I can't get a bet down -- and poker is just not big enough. Not even close. I guess we'd be eating a lot of rice right about now if we still had a house note, on top of today's huge homeowner's insurance and property tax bills.

Oh, heck, I even had eBay back in 1999 and 2000. I picked up some nice profit per item each of those two years, but I didn't push it, because I could see that blackjack was going (casino consolidation, I was getting too famous) and I figured that eBay would be around forever. Oh boy, if I had it to do over again. I would have found some way to sell during the hot years, because after 9-11 and the anthrax dude, the price of shipping soared, and eBay has never been profitable again. Even with the new Priority Mail flat rate boxes, so I can ship 20 pounds to Washington state for $11.40 instead of 3 pounds for $18 -- well, let's just say, from this month's tests, I'm not encouraged that there's any money to be made on eBay by "real" people. The fees are quite simply too many and too expensive -- listing fee, final value fee, paypal fee, shipping (the biggie!), even 70 cents for tracking. Yikes-a-matic.

Oh, and a useful thing I found yesterday -- frugaltravelguy's email address. Got another referral from him for DH's BankDirect account. We'll use some of that money that came off the CD to keep him earning miles for a future free trip. Both AA and Delta have expiration dates, and I need "triggers" to keep his miles from expiring. I don't want to take all the trips in 2011, right? Spread the party out a little.
