massive movement of the swainson's hawk variety
2017-10-15 - 4:13 p.m.
I wish I had arranged to stay a few more extra days, especially considering how cheap the extra days would've been. After all the bad weather, the hawks did indeed stack up, and apparently over 700,000 passed on Friday & Saturday! But there was no way to know in advance...
We need better science for predicting and controlling the weather, that's for sure. I'm just glad we got a couple of those strong migrations earlier, on Oct. 5 and 6. Hundreds of thousands of birds... truly stunning.
I didn't take many pictures but I have a few that I will be uploading to Instagram and probably Twitter a bit at a time through the end of the month.
Here is today's, from the road over the mountain from Tuxtapec to Oaxaca. Ooh, and I just remembered I still have to replace ALL the photos from 2008, 2009, and 2010. Even though it's a few years back, since Andrew is trying to make diaryland pretty again, I prefer not to leave all those broken images... Anyway for today here's this:
The birds in this picture are broadwings, since our huge days were broadwing days...
