Read my new book, The 10 Best Things You Can Do For Your Bird at Amazon or at many other fine distributors like Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and more.

By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

A Sadean take on Asimov's classic Three Laws of Robotics can be found in Roger Williams' NOW REVIEWED ON SLASHDOT!!! The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. Adult readers only please -- explicit sex and violence. For updates on the "Dead Tree Project" and other topics, you may visit the official fan site, Passages in the Void..

goodbye, skippy

2003-03-08 - 10:11 a.m.

It is a sad morning. My little old man Skippy, the Fischer's Lovebird, was killed in the night. He was at least 12 years old, and he was apparently lame in one leg from hatch, but he was a cheerful, friendly soul who always took a great interest in everything around him. He made regular attempts to flirt with the Amazon and never seemed discouraged by Cookie's haughty refusal to acknowledge his existence. D. always said that Skippy was the most beautiful of my birds, with his dark and light blue, as well as burnt orange, accents to his bright green feathers.

He will be missed.

It appears that a rat got into the bird porch and somehow caught hold of Skippy. While the local rats are small, and a city dweller would doubtless sneer and place them in the category of mere mice, these incredibly vicious rodents are not to be disrespected. They can chew through anything, even the insulation in the walls, which seems to be what happened here. If those much larger city rats were this aggressive, no child under age 10 would be safe from being carried away in the night.

We have declared war. At least their nasty, aggressive, snapping, chewing nature makes them relatively easy to trap. Death to rats!

Hummingbird Report: One adult female Ruby-Throated/Black-chinned type. Lots of tail-pumping. May vote this one a Black-chinned. Decisions, decisions. Had a nice close look while she sampled the Abutilon.

later

Visited J. She has acquired 2 more geese, and her domestic duck flock was enhanced by wild volunteers. Her herb starts were larger and more beautiful than mine. She really has the touch. We had some wine and got silly. Somehow she has acquired an animatronic Harry Potter dragon that snores, breathes fire, and bursts out laughing at odd intervals.

Rumors have been flying for days that the capture of Osama has either already occurred or is actually at hand, especially since some reports from Pakistan say that the whole Khalid Mohammed story was a fabrication, since he was already reported dead there in a shoot-out on Sept. 11, 2002. Other rumors say that members of Osama's family have already been seized. We shall see what we shall see. Stories of a shoot-out, with no proof, or stories of "we have captured this evildoer, but, er, we can't remember if we have him or the Pakistanis have him" are probably not going to fly with Osama. We the people are going to want to see evidence that a capture actually occurred.
