live blogging the flood because NWS dropped the ball 2014-05-28 - 9:42 a.m. Trapped in the house by the street flooding, which is fairly terrifying. The storm continues. like two minutes later The National Weather Service just scared the shit out of me by sending a 911 on my cell phone which was right at my elbow. Says to expect flash flood conditions through 11:45. Type: Severe Alert, whatever that means. It hardly matters. Can't drive out now anyway. They should have said something earlier. I just checked the more extended panic attack they posted online. How certain is the event? Certain. When is it taking place? Now...Yeppers, that's real useful. I can see the street flooding just by looking out my window. We pay you dudes to make a forecast. Here's their comment about Mandeville (and surrounding cities): At 9:36 am CDT, National Weather Service meteorologists detected flash flooding from thunderstorms over the warned area. A band of thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall over Western Saint Tammany and extreme southern Tangipahoa parishes. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches have been indicated by radar in this area. An additional 2 to 3 inches of rainfall will be possible from storms over northern Lake Pontchartrain through late morning hours. This heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in the warned area. For realz? They didn't notice a hella big storm was underway until 9:36? I could do that job. I could see there was an issue by 9:15 AM.
