Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

summer tanager joins the yard list

2004-05-17 - 7:33 a.m.

A flash of red caught my eye -- a flash that wasn't quite the right shade to be one of my Northern Cardinals, not even the awkwardly colored older fledglings. I looked up, and the flash perched on the telephone wire in all his rosy red glory. And so the Summer Tanager becomes the 72nd bird on the yard list.

later

Biked for an hour and then paused at a neighbor's house to watch a loud Mockingbird fledgling demand food. He got it, too.

I'll have a good yard list for the day. I've already seen a Yellow-Billed Cuckoo in the oak tree and a Swallow-Tailed Kite sailing low and lazily first over the Light Polluter's house and then mine.

later

The Monarch Butterflies have discovered the milkweed flowers.

front yard orange lilies
 2004 by Elaine Radford

The Halloween lilies are still going strong although, if last autumn is any guide, they will give their all in May and won't come back in October.

gardenia flower
 2004 by Elaine Radford

The gardenia bush, started from a single flower from A., is now too big for me to handle and has to be rolled around on wheels. It has burst into huge white blossoms, and the fragrance is overwhelming when I walk past.

later

The 4:15 P.M. Mississippi Kite mating was a particularly vigorous one. Well done, guys!

Hummingbird Report: I've only seen a fiery throated male RTHU the last couple of days, but DH says when working outside yesterday, he saw a female.
