Read my new book, The 10 Best Things You Can Do For Your Bird at Amazon or at many other fine distributors like Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and more.

By public demand, and after a delay of an embarrassing number of years, I've finally put my notorious essay, Ender and Hitler: Sympathy for the Superman, free on the fabulous internets.

A bibliography of my published books and stories.

Here's a simple card-counting FAQ to get you up to speed on the basics. Here's the true story of the notorious DD' blackjack team, told for the first time on the fabulous internets. No other team went from a starting investor's bankroll of zero to winning millions of dollars.

A Sadean take on Asimov's classic Three Laws of Robotics can be found in Roger Williams' NOW REVIEWED ON SLASHDOT!!! The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect. Adult readers only please -- explicit sex and violence. For updates on the "Dead Tree Project" and other topics, you may visit the official fan site, Passages in the Void..

is "van houttii" a funny name?

2003-03-29 - 3:09 p.m.

A gray, cold, drizzly all-round miserable day. Nonetheless, we ventured out to Mizzell's and acquired a trio of the prized "van houttii" Salvia plants that grow into huge flowering bushes in full shade.

I suppose I should run some more banner ads if I am to have any hope of finding other birders on diaryland to join the birding diaryring. I should dig up my photographs of bird nests and babies that I took in the 1980s and get them posted if they still look good to me.

The Rumor Mill: It is said that troops on the front line near Baghdad are receiving only one MRE ("meal ready to eat") per day. Apparently we are to support our troops by providing all millionaires with a $90,000 annual tax cut and wrapping a bit of ribbon around a tree. I would have thought that providing soldiers with food and medical care would be more efficacious, but no one asked for my opinion.

Hummingbird Report: At least one and maybe more male R-Ts passing through. One is out there right now.

A male R-T hummer is feeding in the cold rain. Poor little guy. This morning, I was watching him, or perhaps another one, fight the wind as he tried to feed.

The rumor about food rationing is apparently true, and yahoo news is reporting that Iraqi refugees have given food to hungry Marines. One of the dolphins employed to detect underwater mines has already gone AWOL. Claims are being thrown around that the Moroccan government is, or is not, providing the U.S. with monkeys to detonate land mines.
