2003-04-29 - 10:47 a.m. I knew that the pull-out was coming from the rumors but it was still a bit of a shock to see the news just now. The United States has given in to Osama bin Laden's demand to get out of Saudi Arabia -- his only demand after the 9-11 terror attack, other than the ridiculous ravings that no one took seriously for Israel to get out of the Middle East. I suppose the real motive for stealing Iraq was to keep a base of operations under American control in that area, while slinking away from Saudi Arabia in defeat. Iraq was chosen, of course, because it had been under sanction for so long and had been so thoroughly searched by the United Nations, and we could be comfortable in knowing that we were attacking a people with virtually no weapons or no defense. I don't know whose behavior has been more terrible in all this, the bin Ladens or the various Bush administration generals and puppeteers. The lesson to be learned: Attack America and you get what you want after a small period of time has passed to provide deniability. Does the government honestly believe that the American people have no memory? Or are they that secure in their ability to crack down on all dissent and disappear anyone who gets in their way? This is bad. How bad, only time can tell.
I suppose you could argue that we should have left Saudi Arabia years ago. What difference does it make if the Saudi Royal family is overthrown by the bin Laden family? They are all equally horrible. Let them kill each other. I have to admit to being somewhat curious as to how long the king (said to have Alzheimer's disease) will remain alive after the U.S. withdrawal and how long it will be before an actual bin Laden family member declares himself king or "president" or whatever. I'll put the over/under at a decade before we see some "President" bin Laden in Saudi Arabia. It just seems to me, by leaving now, like this, without a full investigation of the Saudi and bin Laden ties to 9-11, our government has proved to the world that there is profit in attacking America. I mean, once we pull out, it is almost inevitable that sooner or later the bin Ladens will be the new royalty, and Osama and the rest will have exactly what they want. Where is the justice here? What is the message being sent to the world? That we won't fight back but instead will turn around and kick someone who is weaker? Where is the democracy and justice and security in that?
